An extraordinary congress of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Turkey is to be held over the next weeks.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is not planning to run for the AKP leadership, according to the English-language version of Sabah, a newspaper known for close links to the government.
In line with the rules of the party, it is usually its leader who also takes the Prime Minister's seat.
Rumors have been circulating since earlier this week that Davutoglu is considering whether to step down.
Tensions have reportedly been on the rise between Davutoglu and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the latter seeks to establish and executive presidency through constitutional changes, but has also triggered a process of curbing Davutoglu's powers.
The two met on Wednesday afternoon, their talk being followed by report about the AKP congress.
A news conference of Davutoglu is due at 11:00 local time (08:00 GMT), after a meeting of AKP's core leadership earlier the same day.
The period between May 21 and June 06 is a possible timeframe for the AKP congress, according to a party official.
