Spanish King Felipe VI has announced no new candidate will be put forward as Prime Minister, paving the way for early elections.
Parliament will be dissolved on May 03, and a snap vote will be held on June 26, local media report.
The legislature's lower house would not provide enough support for any new Prime Minister candidate, the King believes.
His announcement followed a meeting with socialist leader Pedro S?nchez which did not produce substantial results.
The website of daily El Pa?s ran a headline reading that "the incapacity of parties to act together forces a return to polls".
The December 20 election that took place last year failed to produce and outright majority, while political parties could not agree on a stable coalition.
During a visit to Bulgaria last week, acting Justice Minister Rafael Catal? accused socialists of not willing to negotiate on a broad coalition with the conservative Popular Party of the Prime Minister in office, Mariano Rajoy.
