Twelve new containers for old clothes and textile items have been placed in the streets of Sofia this week as part of a nationwide campaign launched by the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC).
"This is an idea we’ve borrowed from our partners in Germany, Austria and Switzerland," BRC Chairman Hristo Grigorov has told public radio broadcaster BNR.
The BRC plans to have nearly 1,000 containers across the country by the wnd of 2016.
Each container has a capacity of 300 kg. People can donate clothes as well as curtains, blankets, all in serviceable condition and packed in a bag. The clothes which are fit for use will be later separated from the other items to become part of the so-called crisis reserve used to provide clothing to people in need in case of disasters. The textile items unfit for use will be recycled with the proceeds to be paid into the Fund for Supporting Victims of Disasters and Crises.
The campaign, which started in Plovdiv last month, will expand to northern Bulgaria as well as the cities of Burgas, Stara Zagora and Sliven in the southern part of the country by the middle of the year.
A further 25 containers will be placed at designated locations in Sofia and Plovdiv next month.
