Bulgaria: Bulgarian Parliament Committee Cuts Length of Election Campaigns to 21 Days

The Legal Affairs Committee in Bulgaria’s Parliament has decided to cut the length of election campaigns to 21 days from the current 30 days, news daily Dnevnik reported on Monday.

The change to the Election Code put forward by the leader of the parliamentary faction of GERB party Tsvetan Tsvetanov was passed on second and final reading in a 7-0 vote with five abstentions.

The head of the committee Danail Kirilov has explained that the cut in the length of the election campaign was needed to avoid apathy among voters in the final week of the campaign, giving as examples France and the Czech Republic which had election campaigns of 14 and 16 days, respectively.

In addition, shorter election campaigns would allow smaller political parties to save costs, Kirilov said, according to dnevnik.bg.

Bulgaria will hold presidential elections later this year.
