Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), one of the parties constituting the junior coalition partner, the Reformist Bloc (RB), demanded the resignation of Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski on Monday.

DSB demanded the resignation of Moskovski due to the recent corruption scandal involving the chairperson of the Road Transport Administration (DAI) executive agency Tsvetelin Tsvetanov.

Tsvetanov as well as thirteen other officials of DAI were arrested on suspicions of conducting illegal practices when issuing certificates to road transport companies and driving licences.

At a press conference, the leader of DSB Radan Kanev and his deputy Atanas Atanasov demanded Moskovski to resign as all facts and circumstances pointed that he was aware of the corruption practices DAI but no measures were taken.

According to Kanev and Atanasov, the exclusion of Tsvetanov from the main ruling party GERB was not enough.

They claim to have more signals for such practices which will be submitted to the competent authorities.

Atanasov reminded that Moskovski had appointed Tsvetanov after consultation with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

He added that during the appointment of Tsvetanov in January 2015, the National Association of Bulgarian Carriers had identified him as the most unsuitable candidate for the position.

In December last year, the head of DAI in Sofia submitted a signal to Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov.

Kanev claimed that in fact two corruption schemes were operating in DAI – one run by GERB and the other by the second largest opposition party – the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS).

According to him, licences to carriers in the regions of Blagoevgrad, Haskovo and Vidin were issued only to members of these two parties.

Kanev called for large-scale inspections in other state structures which for years have been associated with corruption.

This is the latest in a series of tensions within the ruling coalition.

DSB has been in opposition after the parliament failed to adopt all the proposed amendments to the constitution concerning the judicial reform which had been proposed by former Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov.

Although the party is in opposition, Health Minister Petar Moskov, who is member of DSB, retains his position in the cabinet.
