The Bulgarian parliament is expected to dissolve the recently established ad hoc committee of inquiry on allegations of Russian and Turkish interference in the internal affairs of Bulgaria.

This was stated by high-level sources within the main ruling party GERB for Standart daily.

The chairperson of the parliamentary group of GERB, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, has entrusted the chair of the committee, Valentin Radev, to hold consultations with the relevant institutions.

Tsvetanov has also initiated talks with the other parliamentary represented parties on the dissolution of the committee.

Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva and the chairperson of the foreign policy committee, Dzhema Grozdanova, are also working on its dissolution.

During the weekend, Tsvetanov noted that maybe there is no need for such a parliamentary committee, admitting that MPs had been misled by media publications.

According to him, a reasonable decision could be reached which would not harm bilateral relations of Bulgaria with Russia and Turkey.

Also during the weekend, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov similarly commented on the committee, noting that nothing good would come out of it.

Pointing to the harsh reactions of the foreign ministries of Russia and Turkey, Borisov recommended to Tsvetanov and MPs to think over the committee.

The Bulgarian prime minister reminded that the establishment of the committee had come at a time when the relations with the two countries had started to improve.

In his words, Russian tour operators were redirecting their activities towards Bulgaria, while Turkey was not reacting harshly towards the fence at the border.

Last week, the spokesperson of the Russian foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the committee was ludicrous and its name was absurd.

The Turkish embassy to Bulgaria identified the establishment of the committee as an “initiative with political motives”.
