A Bulgarian truck driver affected by the blockade staged at the border with Greece was admitted to hospital after feeling unwell.
According to Darik radio, the driver suffered a stroke after waiting for hours at the queue of trucks on the Kulata-Promachonas checkpoint.
He was found in his truck five kilometres into Greek territory by a fellow truck driver who called the 112 emergency number.
The driver was admitted to the hospital in Sandanski with stroke-like symptoms where he underwent medical examinations. His condition has been stabilized and he is receiving the necessary treatment.
On Thursday, the passage of vehicles is temporary suspended through the Ilinden-Exochi checkpoint. According to unofficial information, the blockade will last until 15 o’clock (EET).
The remaining five checkpoints are functioning normally.
Greek farmers have been protesting proposed increases of tax and pension contributions by staging blockades at checkpoints along the border with Bulgaria in the past month.
Last week, the tensions escalated when Bulgarian truck drivers responded with a counter-blockade after Greek farmers had failed to keep to their promise to lift the blockade at certain hours each day to avoid the queuing up of trucks.
On Wednesday, a prosecutor from the Greek Supreme Court ordered the lifting of the blockades staged by farmers, while Bulgarian drivers threatened to stage blockades during Easter and the summer.
