Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly said he is accepting the Russia and the United States' plan for cessation of hostilities, German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports, citing Syrian state agency SANA.

An agreement reached earlier this month in Munich is now supposed to be in place as of Saturday, after Assad has met the conditions of the main opposition forces who demand the Damascus regime also cease hostilities.

The truce, however, will not apply to the strongest radical groups fighting in Syria, Islamic State (IS) and the Nusra Front.

The developments follow an urge by Washington and Moscow for all sides to sign up to the agreement by midday on Friday, February 26.
