Up to 80 000 migrants face deportation if Sweden rejects their asylum applications as officials are intending to do at the moment, according to Swedish Interior Minister Anders Ygeman.

It will take several years to deport the migrants which could possibly constitute nearly half of all the asylum seekers who submitted applications over the past year.

Some 163 000 people applied for asylum in Sweden in 2015, but the numbers for this year might drop drastically after the country moved early in January to introduce border controls in order to curb the migrant influx.

For the moment, the number of those facing deportation is about 60 000 but "could climb to 80 000," the BBC quotes him as telling national media.

The country will have to hire aircraft used for charter flights to carry out the procedure.

Sweden, a country of 9.5 million people, is the EU member state with the highest number of asylum seekers per capita.
