Bulgaria: European Commission to Present Bulgaria CVM Report

The European Commission is expected to officially present and adopt on Wednesday the annual reports assessing the progress made by Bulgaria and Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).

Initial reports based on a draft of the document suggested that the European Commission will be mostly positive in its assessment of the Bulgarian reforms in the fields of justice and internal affairs.

The report is expected to be most critical towards the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) and the prosecutor's office.

The report comes as pressure in the judicial system has been mounting, with the governing coalition on Tuesday calling on VSS to resign due to recent scandals.

Members of VSS identified the politicians' demand for resignation as an interference in the impartiality of the judiciary.

VSS is expected to convene at a meeting in order to discuss the issue as it is the only institution capable of deciding whether to dissolve itself.
