Winter Tourism: 1.8 Million Visit Bulgaria
Bulgaria has witnessed a bustling winter tourism season, with a total of 1.8 million tourists gracing its picturesque landscapes from December 1 to March 25
The director of the mountain rescue service, Radko Markov, warned on Friday that there is a considerable danger of avalanches occurring in the Bulgarian mountains.
Markov recommended to tourists to prepare well before going out in the mountain by researching the route and avoiding areas prone to avalanches in order to minimise the risks of being engulfed by an avalanche.
The warning comes after an avalanche in the area of the Aleko chalet on Vitosha mountain claimed the lives of two people on Thursday.
In an interview for Focus radio, Markov stated that once engulfed by an avalanche, there is little one can do as often the avalanche descends with a high speed.
During this time of the year, it is advisable for tourists to use the winter trail marking, which is designated with poles, as it avoids areas prone to avalanches.
If the avalanche occurs close to a ski slope, rescuers can react swiftly, but if it occurs high in the mountain, the rescue operation can take up to several hours.
