According to the chairperson of the Bulgarian Book Association, Veselin Todorov, book sales in Bulgaria registered 7% increase in 2015.

A growing interest was also recorded towards Bulgarian literature, with 1/5 of the fifty best selling titles being of Bulgarian authors, Todorov said in an interview for Focus news agency.

The greatest interest was registered towards child and youth books, which accounted for 40 % of all sales.

In particular, there was growing interest towards luxury editions designed with authors' concepts and illustrations.

The Bulgarian video blogger Emil Konrad and his book “The things we are not taught at schools” were the most selling author and book.

Konrad is a real phenomenon among teenagers, having sold nearly 40 000 copies of his book in the past year.

The second best selling book was the guide to less known Bulgarian destinations “101 detours”, followed by the gamebook “Balgar”.

There was a decrease in the interest towards fictional and academic literature as well as towards books on achieving business self-perfection, which used to be popular ten-fifteen years ago.

Among the best selling foreign titles were classics such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and the novels of Turkish writer Elif Safak.

The increase in book sales came despite the 2.5 % rise in the prices of books.

Annually, book sales in Bulgaria amount to BGN 150 M, which means that an average Bulgarian spends slightly more than BGN 20 on books per year.

Having in mind that the average price of books is BGN 11.8, this means that Bulgarians buy two books annually.
