Strong winds and sub-zero temperatures are expected in 12 of Bulgaria's 28 regions, with a Code Yellow alert issued by the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

The regions included in the warning are Ruse, Razgrad, Silistra, Targovishte, Shumen, Dobrich, Varna, Burgas, Sliven, Yambol, Haskovo, and Kardzhali.

Along the Black Sea coastline, gale-force winds are likely to reach the speed 14-17 m per second, with gusts measuring up to 18-20 m/s.

The past few days' cold spell follows more than a week of unusually warm weather, with spring temperatures around Christmas.
