Bulgaria: Cyberattacks Hit Banking Services in Turkey

Several Turkish banks experienced sporadic disruption to credit card transactions on Friday in the latest wave of a two-week long cyber assault on public and financial websites, Reuters reported.

Officials at Isbank, Garanti and Ziraat Bank have confirmed the cyberattacks, saying they had caused intermittent disruptions, according to the newswire. Turkish banks came under cyberattack on Thursday as well, hurriyetdailynews.com reported.

The attacks restricted access to online banking services of some Turkish lenders but didn’t access the banks’ systems, according to banking sources.

It was not clear who was behind the cyberattacks but Nic.tr, a non-government body which administers addresses for websites using the ".tr" domain, said they originated from "organized sources" outside Turkey, dailysabah.com reported. Ministries, the military, banks and many commercial sites in Turkey use the ".tr" domain.

With no clear evidence having emerged so far, Turkish authorities have avoided laying blame for the cyberattacks. But Turkish media reports have suggested  the attacks could have originated in Russia, amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Ankara over last month’s downing of a Russian warplane by Turkey, or staged by hacking collective Anonymous.

Last week, the hacking group released video warning of continued assault if the Turkish government doesn't stop 'supporting Islamic State'  - an allegation which Ankara denies.
