The Regional Court in Plovdiv, in southern Bulgaria, has issued its first jail sentences for people smuggling, bTV reported on Tuesday.

One man was sentenced to eight months in prison and four other defendants were issued suspended sentences as well as fines ranging from BGN 1000 to BGN 5000, the Bulgarian TV station said.

The five, including an Afghan national, were found guilty of trafficking 18 illegal migrants from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan through Bulgarian territory.

The migrants, who carried no identity documents with them, were detained by police in a house in Stolipinovo neighbourhood of Plovdiv on 1 November 2015.
