Turkey has advised its citizens to delay planned trips to Russia until the current crisis in baletaral relations is resolved.
"Within the framework of the recent developments in Turkey-Russia relations, it has been observed that our citizens have been having some difficulties with their trips to the Russian Federation and their residence within the said country as of November 24,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Therefore, "until this situation is cleared, we advise our citizens to delay non-urgent and non-significant trips” to Russia," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.
Relations between Moscow and Ankara have deteriorated rapidly after a Turkish fighter jet shot down a Russian warplane in the border area between Syria and Turkey on November 24. Ankara says that the Russian Su-24 bomber violated Turkey’s airspace and ignored warnings to leave it but Moscow claims that there was no violation of Turkish airspace and no warnings were issued by the Turkish Air Force.
Turkish diplomatic sources have said that at least 26 Turkish businessmen were taken into police custody in Russia's Black Sea city of Krasnodar late on November 25 before five of them returned to Turkey on Saturday, according to the Turkish news agency.
The warning issued by Turkey to its citizens comes in the wake of Russia’s decision to suspend its visa-free travel agreement with Turkey from the beginning of next year. Russia has also advised its citizens against travelling to Turkey as tourists “as terrorism threat there is no less than in Egypt."
Turkey is the top foreign holiday destination for Russian tourists. Some 3.2 million Russian holidaymakers visited Turkey in 2014 and more than one million travelled there in the first half of 2015.
