Bulgaria: EU Interior Ministers to Discuss Security Measures in Aftermath of Paris Attacks

The interior ministers of the EU member states will convene at an extraordinary meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council in order to discuss heightened security measures in the aftermath of last week's attacks in Paris.

The meeting, which will take place in Brussels on Friday, was summoned by the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU in coordination with French authorities.

Justice and home affairs ministers will ensure the follow-up of existing measures and discuss how to strengthen the response of the EU by adopting a set of conclusions.

The meeting will focus in particular on the following key topics: European Passenger Name Record (PNR); trafficking of firearms; the reinforcement of controls at external borders; information sharing; terrorist financing; judicial response to terrorism and violent extremism.

The Council is expected to reiterate the need for finalising an ambitious PNR before the end of the year.

The European Commission has already moved towards tightening the control of firearms and proposed the revision of the current directive on firearms.

The ministers of the member states are expected to commit themselves to strengthening border controls and enhancing law enforcement cooperation on counter-terrorism.
