The FBI had informed Italian authorities about potential targets of terror attacks in Rome and Milan, AP reported.

St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Milan's cathedral and La Scala opera house were listed as potential targets, according to a Italian state TV news report, the newswire said. AP also quoted RAI state radio as saying early on Thursday that "there are no direct signs of concrete threats" in connection with the information.

The U.S. State Department has also warned that the three landmark buildings and as well as "general venues" like churches, synagogues, hotels, restaurants and theaters in the two Italian cities have been identified as "potential targets".

The AP quoted the State Department saying in a security message issued to U.S. citizens on Thursday that "terrorist groups may possibly” use methods similar to those employed in the deadly attacks in Paris on November 13.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that security measures in the Italian capital had been visibly heightened following the Paris attacks, with soldiers on guard in busy areas of Rome and stepped-up checks for visitors to the Vatican City.
