Sofia investigative officials have ordered the detention of Ataka party leader Volen Siderov, the prosecution has announced.

Siderov and Desislav Chukolov, a member of his party, arrived at the investigation office in Bulgaria's capital on Tuesday morning after being summoned at the request of the Prosecutor's office.

The two are facing hooliganism charges.

A court is now to decide whether the 72-hour detention is to be extended indefinitely.

Siderov and Chukolov were escorted by a crowd of supporters which vowed to prevent police from detaining him if authorities decide he should be remanded.

The leader, for his part, warned Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov (it was the latter's institution that demanded his arrest) that their "dictatorship... will be toppled very soon."

In his words, "there will be a political earthquake" that will result in them "losing power".

Siderov's lawyer Yavor Notev, also an MP from his party, called the detention "unconstitutional", since the charges that triggered authorities to arrest Siderov do not fully match those which Parliament had accepted as the legal ground to allow the move.

Siderov and Chukolov, however, gave up their immunity last week after having refused to do so since end-October.

Notev has added Siderov is beginning a hunger strike over his detention, starting Tuesday.
