The Foreign Ministry advised on Friday Bulgarians to refrain from travelling to the Egyptian resorts located on the Sinai peninsula (Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and others) until the investigation of the crashed Russian airplane has come out with a definitive conclusion on the likely causes of the incident.

The ministry takes into account the uncertainty surrounding the likely causes of the crash, including the possibility of a bombing by militants affiliated to Islamic State (IS), which had been suggested by US and British intelligence.

The Airbus A321 operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia was conducting flight 9268 between the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and Saint Petersburg when it crashed in North Sinai shortly after take-off on October 31.

None of the 224 people on board the airplane, among whom were 217 passengers and seven crew members, survived the crash.

The ministry advises Bulgarians currently on holiday in Sharm el-Sheikh not to leave their hotels and to contact the Bulgarian embassy in Cairo for further explanation and guidance.

At this point, it is also advisable to postpone travel to the Egyptian resorts in Hurghada, the foreign ministry notes.
