At least 30 000 people took to the streets of Romanian cities again on Wednesday, hours after the resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta's government.

Demonstrators blamed the incident at the Collectiv club in Bucharest which killed 32 people and injured hundreds last week.

On Tuesday evening, about 20 000 protested, calling for Ponta's resignation. The PM stepped down the morning after, saying he could not ignore the wish of the Romanian people.

But in the evening that followed, demonstrators, called for a technocrat government and declared their distrust for all political parties, the Bulgarian News Agency has said. Some local TV reports put the overall number of protesters across the country at 50 000.

Talks are already underway to form a new government after Ponta's resignation.

President Klaus Iohannis, who has repeatedly stated Romania needs another government not led by Ponta, well before the tragedy of last week, is to name the next PM after the consultations which has to be approved then by Parliament. Two unsuccessful attempts at this will trigger early elections.

Ponta had already been under fire over a corruption investigation which made him resign as leader of his Social Democratic Party (PSD).
