Bulgaria's DPS Open to New Governance Strategies as Coalition Talks Progress
Amidst ongoing negotiations to form a new government, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) has expressed openness to exploring alternative governance arrangements
Sofia City Court failed to launch on Thursday the trial against Hristo Biserov, a former Deputy Parliament Speaker who quit in 2013, days before reports emerged that he was under investigation over tax crimes.
Biserov had until then been considered one of the most important members of the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), Bulgaria's third-largest political party which has declared itself a defender of ethnic minority rights.
On Thursday morning, a lawyer for Biserov said the defendant was unable to appear before court after having been taken to hospital the day before.
The trial is now adjourned until November 25.
In April, Biserov was indicted with charges on several counts, including tax evasion and undeclared currency deals. Allegedly, he also failed present a true income statement containing information about his assets in a Swiss bank.
In July, prosecution resubmitted the indictment after Sofia City Court had returned it over "irregularities".
