A natural gas pipeline which exploded and caught fire on Friday morning near Pavlikeni, in north central Bulgaria, will be repaired within 48 hours, Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova has said.
The accident won’t lead to suspension of the pumping of gas into the underground storage facility in Chiren as the flow of gas had been rerouted, Petkova said following a visit to the site of the blast.
Gas supply to consumers won’t be interrupted, she added.
Physical wear and tear of the high-pressure gas pipeline in the area, which was laid more than 40 years ago, is the most likely cause of the accident, according to Petkova.
No one was injured by the blast and no damage to buildings was reported. The accident took place in an uninhabited area between the villages of Batak and Nedan, near Pavlikeni, about 6.20 a.m. (0320 GMT) on Friday.
