Turkey claims that a second Russian fighter aircraft has violated its airspace over the weekend.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry informed that a Russian fighter aircraft had violated its airspace on October 3.

According to an official of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the second violation occurred on October 4, Hurriyet Daily quotes him as saying.

As it did on the first occasion, Ankara once again summoned the Russian ambassador to seek explanation of the incident.

The information on the second violation first emerged in a statement of NATO issued on Monday, which protested the Russian incursions.

According to the statement, Turkish airspace in the southern province of Hatay was violated on October 3 and October 4 by Russian Air Force SU-30 and SU-24 aircraft.

NATO claims that the Russian aircraft entered Turkish airspace despite the “clear, timely and repeated warnings of Turkish authorities”.

In line with NATO practices, Turkish fighter aircraft responded to the incursions by closing to identify the intruder after which the Russian airplanes left Turkish airspace.

NATO strongly condemned the Russian violation of Turkish airspace and called on Moscow to take all necessary measures to ensure such violations do not take place in the future.

Russia confirmed the first violation, saying it was due to poor weather conditions and vowed to take the necessary steps to avoid the repetition of similar incidents in the future.

Turkey, which is yet to confirm the second violation officially, threatened to respond if provoked again.
