Turkish President Recep Erdogan officially announced late on Monday the holding of renewed general elections in the country.
The statement of Erdogan came a day after the deadline on forming a coalition government expired on Sunday.
Following a four-hour meeting with Parliament Speaker Ismet Yilmaz on Monday, the Turkish president announced the re-election.
The decision has been published in the official gazette, triggering the process of a caretaker government, Anadolu Agency informs.
In the general elections, which were held in June, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) lost its parliamentary majority, which necessitated the forming of a coalition government.
However AKP failed to reach an agreement with any of the other three parliamentary represented parties.
Turkish Prime Minister and AKP leader Ahmet Davutoglu failed to reach an agreement with the leaders of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), while the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) ruled out coalition talks with the largest party.
Erdogan is to meet Davutoglu on Tuesday to ask him to form an interim government.
The council of ministers will resign and the president will appoint a prime minister to form a provisional cabinet.
The caretaker government should be formed within five days of publication in the official gazette of the decision on holding renewed elections.
The re-election must be held within 90 days and the Supreme Election Board has already suggested November 1 as a possible date for the snap polls.
CHP and MHP expressed opposition to their participation in an interim government led by AKP, Daily Hurriyet reports.
