The quality of life in the Bulgarian capital steadily deteriorated, recording a drop for the fifth consecutive year.

This is revealed by the latest Global Liveability Ranking 2015 of The Economist Intelligence Unit, daily Sega informs.

Sofia occupies 87^th place in the ranking featuring 140 cities, which are ordered according to thirty factors across five areas – stability, infrastructure, education, healthcare and environment.

The report notes the increase in global instability in the past twelve months, with liveability having decreased in 57 cities.

Since 2010 average liveability across the world dropped by 1 %, while the score for stability and safety decreased by 2.2 %.

This has been largely due to the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Ukraine and Libya, as well as terrorist attacks in France and Tunisia coupled with civil unrest in the US.

In Athens, the main cause for the decline in the quality of life has been the austerity measures rather than unrest.

Kiev recorded the sharpest drop in the last year and as a result now it ranks as one of the ten least liveable cities

The most liveable cities tend to be cities of medium size with relatively low population density in more affluent countries , which explains the low ranking of London and New York

Melbourne tops the ranking for the fourth consecutive year with 97.5 points, followed by Vienna and Vancouver.

Sofia is among the cities registering the most considerable decrease along with Athens, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Tripoi and Damascus.

Among the cities recording the greatest progress are Harare, Dubai, Warsaw, Kuwait City, Honolulu, Beijing, Bratislava, Nairobi, Baku and others.
