The mayor of Varna Ivan Portnih has issued a ban on the consumption of alcohol at outdoor public spaces on the territory of the Bulgarian Black Sea capital and the nearby resorts.

The ban was issued in view of the frequent cases of alcohol tourism and signals submitted by insurance companies and tour operators, daily Sega reports.

The prohibition concerns above all drinking in gardens, alleys and parks, the deputy mayor in charge of security Todor Ivanov clarified.

Ivanov stated that the local authorities are strongly concerned that tourists are getting drunk in the resorts and are disrupting the stay of other visitors.

He added that the number of incidents involving drunk tourists was not insignificant.

The implementation of the drinking ban will be enforced by the municipal police and the district department of the interior ministry.

The violators will be sanctioned according to the municipal legislation on public order.

The deputies of the mayor, the secretary of the municipality, the chairperson of the municipal council, directors of directorates and mayors of other settlements have all been informed of the ban.
