A Code Red alert has been issued in Bulgaria's northern and southeastern regions, meteorologists have said.

This is a warning of possible forest blazes spreading quickly throughout the respective regions and turning hard to contain.

The areas include Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Lovech, Burgas, Yambol, haskovo, and Varna.

A Code Orange alert is also in force on Sunday in most of Bulgaria meaning a slightly lower risk.

High temperatures in Bulgaria over the past weeks have caused a number of fires throughout the country, but also elsewhere in Southern Europe where thermometers got over 35 on a record number of days this summer.
