Turkey has started building a wall along its border with Syria following a recent wave of attacks, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.

The three-metre tall concrete wall is planned to stretch for eight kilometers in Reyhanli district of Hatay province, just across the Syrian town of Atmeh.

A wave of attacks hit Turkey’s southern regions along the border with Syria in recent weeks starting with a suicide blast in Suruc on 20 July which killed 32 civilians. Ankara blamed the bombing on the Islamic State group.

Turkey launched air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria after the attack.

Hatay is home to thousands of Syrian refugees who have crossed the border into Turkey to escape the violence at home, AFP recalled in its coverage of the news.
