Left-wing ABV party, which is part of the government, is ready to run in snap elections if these are called, its Deputy Chair has said.

In in interview with private bTV station on Monday Rumen Petkov said the party now has enough organizations across Bulgaria which could help it carry out a new campaign.

Earlier in August, the right-wing Reformist Bloc coalition hinted the country might be sliding toward early elections due to internal problems within the governing alliance of center-right GERB party, the RB and ABV supported by the nationalist Patriotic Front. The cabinet was set up last November after the previous elected administration had remained in office only for a fourteen months.

Also commenting on Sunday's reports of jihadist fighters having entered Bulgaria (later dismissed by officials), Petkov said the matter was just "a criminal case" whose importance should not be exaggerated

However, Petkov, who was Interior Minister from 2005 to 2008,  also warned the danger posed by Islamic Staet (IS) militants to the region should not be underestimated.

In his words, Bulgaria is "lagging behind" in anti-terrorist law compare to European partners.

Petkov is the deputy to Georgi Parvanov, who served as President between 2002 and 2012 and whose left-wing Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV) party has a minister in PM Boyko Borisov's government.
