Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has suggested his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin could go as far as he is allowed to, if he embarks on an offensive into Europe, including the Black Sea countries.
This is an apparent reference to Bulgaria and Romania, which Kiev has repeatedly warned might become a target of what it calls "Russian aggression" alongside Finland and the Baltics.
In an interview with Austrian daily Kurier [DE] he has said, when asked about "how far" into Europe Russia might seek to go: "As far as he [Putin] is allowed - and this goes not only for Ukraine, but also for the rest of the world. Is it possible that he attacks Finland: Yes. That he attacks the Baltic countries: Yes. The Black Sea countries: Yes."
"We are fighting in the east [of Ukraine] not only for the independence of our country, but also for democracy, for the freedom [and] security of Europe," Poroshenko has made clear.
This hasn't been the first time Poroshenko comments on prospective Russian aggression. Last year he managed to raise panic among EU politicians by claiming Putin had told him Moscow troops could reach NATO states "within two days".
