Two Turkish soldiers were killed and four were injured in the town of Lice, in Diyarbakir province, when a car bomb went off while their military vehicle was passing by, Anadolu news agency reported on Sunday.
The Diyarbakir province governor’s office said that the security forces have launched an investigation to find the perpetrators.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack which took place late on Saturday, a day after Turkish Air Force jets bombed Kurdish separatist camps in northern Iraq - the first such strikes since a peace process began in 2012.
According to Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, the airstrikes likely spelled the end of a cease-fire announced in 2013.
Tensions have been running high in Turkey, mostly in the country’s eastern part, after a suicide bomber attacked a group of pro-Kurdish activists in Suruc town, in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa near the border with Syria, on 20 July. At least 32 people were killed in the suicide bombing blamed on Islamic State (IS) group that has taken over large swaths of Syria and Iraq.
Ttwo days later, two police officers were found shot dead in Ceylanpinar. PKK claimed responsibility for the killings which it described as retaliation for the attack in Suruc, according to Anadolu news agency.
Turkey has simultaneously bombed Islamic State positions inside Syria near the border between the two countries and carried out widespread police operations against suspected Kurdish and IS militants and other outlawed groups inside its own territory.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced on Saturday that the latest anti-terrorist operations are not over.
