Proposed changes to Bulgaria’s constitution meant to push forward a reform of the judicial system have been backed by 75% of the members of parliament.
A total of 180 MPs from both governing and opposition political parties have signed a draft bill calling for amendments to the constitution that was submitted to parliament on Friday.
The draft was signed by MPs from GERB party and the Reformist Bloc, the two parties forming Bulgaria’s minority coalition cabinet, plus ABV, which has one minister in the cabinet, plus the Patriotic Front, which lends support to the government in parliament but holds no ministerial seats.
MPs from opposition DPS and Bulgarian Democratic Centre have also signed the draft.
Main opposition Socialists and nationalist Ataka party haven’t signed the proposal.
The draft provides the necessary step that has to be made, Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov commented.
“I cannot speak about a radical reform but this is a very important step towards the necessary reform. At this stage this is the good result possible," he said, according to BGNES.
