Bulgaria: EU to Allocate EUR 25 M to Bulgaria, Turkey for Cross-Border Cooperation

The European Commission (EC) will allocate EUR 25 M of EU funding to Bulgaria and Turkey for cross-border cooperation on environmental protection and sustainable tourism.

The new Interreg-IPA cross-border programme between Bulgaria and Turkey, which was adopted on Thursday, foresees promotion of the environment, preserving the natural and cultural assets in the region and developing sustainable tourism.

Funding will also be allocated to measures improving research and competitiveness in the regions and tackling the problem of brain drain, the EC informs.

EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu said that this programme will benefit the people living in the border regions in terms of jobs, research, innovation and tourism.

The new Interreg-IPA cross-border programme covers three border regions in BulgariaBurgas, Yambol and Haskovo and two Turkish provinces – Edirne and Kirklareli.

The programme is worth almost EUR 30 M, with the contribution from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) exceeding EUR 25 M.

Among the expected results are preventing and mitigating the consequences of natural and man-made disasters, improving the capacity for nature protection, sustainable use and management of common natural resources and supporting spatial planning initiatives across borders.
