Romanian prosecutors on Monday questioned Prime Minister Victor Ponta in a corruption investigation that has prompted President Klaus Iohannis and the opposition to call on him to resign.

Exiting from the headquarters of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in Bucharest, Ponta said the prosecutor in the case has ordered experts to draw up a financial and accounting report, which will be ready next month, according to Agerpress.

Ponta has consistently denied the allegations including tax evasion and money laundering and has pledged to cooperate with prosecutors. The alleged wrongdoing is relating to Ponta’s activites as a lawyer in 2007-2011, before he became Prime Minister in 2012.

Ponta got out of his car on crutches on Monday following a knee surgery in Turkey.

According to the DNA, Victor Ponta is under criminal investigation in a case involving 17 counts of false expense claims, complicity to tax evasion and money laundering while working as a lawyer between 2007 and 2008.

Ponta resigned as head of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on Sunday for the duration of the criminal probe against him.
