Getting There: Blagoevgrad

Society | December 6, 2002, Friday // 00:00

Blagoevgrad is one of the most beautiful towns in Bulgaria. It lies at the foot of the Rila and Pirin mountains, 100 km south of Sofia. The border of the Republic of Macedonia is immediately to the west, and the Greek border is 130 km to the south. The town is a nice place: clean, quiet, and small enough so that you can find anything you need within a few minutes. Blagoevgrad has a fair amount of shops, an open air market and hundreds of cafes and bars, and a number of nice restaurants. You can always find a coffee, restaurant or a disco open. You shouldn't miss to visit the old town Varosha. Blagoevgrad is famous with being a university center because two universities are situated there. The American University in Bulgaria is in Blagoevgrad, which explains why there are many young people from foreign countries living there. Regular buses leave from Sofia for Blagoevgrad at every hour. One-way ticket costs BGN 5.
