Bulgaria Spends 1.87% of GDP on Defense, NATO Report Reveals
Bulgaria's defense expenditure for the year 2023 amounted to $1.9 billion (3.47 billion BGN), representing 1.87 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
Bulgaria’s defense spending in 2015, at BGN 979 M, is the lowest amount since 2005, according to data provided by NATO.
In 2014 Bulgaria allocated BGN 1.102 B to defense, in 2013 the total amount was BGN 1.196 B, in 2012 BGN 1.099 B, and in 2011 BGN 1.066 B, according to statistics published by news.bg.
In 2010 Bulgaria allocated a total of BGN 1.23 B to defense.
In 2005 Bulgaria’s defense spending stood at BGN 1.051 B.
Bulgaria’s defense spending amounts to 1.2% of the GDP in 2015, based on current prices.
In the period 2005-2009, Bulgaria’s defense spending amounted to 2.1% of the GDP on average, in 2010-2014 it stood at 1.4% of the GDP, in 2011 and in 2012 at 1.4% of the GDP, in 2013 at 1.5% of the GDP, and in 2014 at 1.3% of the GDP.
The total number of personnel of Bulgaria’s Armed Forces has been decreasing since 2005, reaching a rate of 25 000 in 2015 from a total of 43 000 troops in 2005.
