Bulgaria: Mayor of Bulgaria's Botevgrad Arrested Photo by BGNES

Bulgarian police arrested Georgi Georgiev, Mayor of the town of Botevgrad on Monday morning, media reports say.

Georgiev was escorted out of his apartment and taken to the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office, according to the website Dnevnik.bg.

The reasons for his detention are not yet clear.

The mayor is also the father of Daniel Georgiev, a GERB MP who last year changed loyalties several times in the course of just 24 hours.

Daniel Georgiev's name was also involved in a municipal property scam after an investigation by private national NOVA TV channel.

His father was until recently also a member of GERB, which however he quit after party chair and PM Boyko Borisov said his candidacy wouldn't be supported at the next local elections due this autumn.

Earlier the National Audit Office revealed that the mayor had allegedly misused some BGN 1.3 M (EUR 0.65 M) while building a waste treatment plant in hus municipality.
