Bulgaria: Survey Shows Half of Bulgarians Support Compulsory, Electronic Voting

The latest opinion poll of Gallup International, which was released on Tuesday, shows that half of all Bulgarians of age of majority would vote in favour of compulsory voting, while slightly below one third would vote against its introduction.

Two thirds of the respondents supported the introduction of majority electoral system, while 10 % expressed opposition, with the rest hesitating.

Half of the Bulgarians declared that they would vote in favour of electronic voting, while slightly below one third would vote against.

A total of 56 % of respondents stated that they would participate in a referendum on changes to the electoral system in case one is held simultaneously with the forthcoming local elections in the autumn.

The survey was conducted around the days of the statement of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, who reaffirmed his call for the holding of a referendum on electoral rules, which had initially been proposed in 2014.

Plevneliev proposed the referendum to feature three questions concerning the introduction of majority electoral system, compulsory voting and electronic voting.
