The Sofia-Varna train got stuck somewhere along the valley of the Iskar River on Tuesday afternoon.
The train reportedly crashed into an insulator from the electricity network. As a result the device fell upon the train, as stated by the Bulgarian National Railway service in an interview for NOVA television.
Currently, the electricity on the pole has been switched off and an assisting locomotive is expected to arrive on site to tow the train with all 180 passengers inside.
‘’It is dark and stuffy, it’s as though we’re in a trap but we can’t even go out through the windows,’’ said an elderly female passenger, travelling along with her 7-year old granddaughter. ‘’ Nobody gives us any information, except for the fact that we’re expecting a train to come in from Mezdra and tow us.’’
According to witness accounts, passengers heard several harsh noises and then the train got stopped and remained in the same position for a long time.
