Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev warned on Thursday that Bulgaria will be the most affected country in the event of a Greek default and deepening of the sovereign debt crisis.
Plevneliev said this at a press conference following the conclusion of the EU-CELAC Summit, which brought together the leaders of the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday.
The president noted that he had read a report of Deutsche Bank, which stated that Bulgaria will be the most affected country from such a development, followed by Macedonia, Serbia and partially Romania.
He said that this was a matter of grave concern and assured that together with the prime minister, the foreign and finance ministers were carefully following the developments.
Moreover, they participated in the decision-making process at European level by expressing the Bulgarian position and opinion, despite Bulgaria not being member of the Eurozone.
Plevneliev pointed that in the last 24 hours he held talks with all European leaders on this topic, daily Dnevnik reports.
He stated that it was important for the Bulgarian voice to be heard and for the country to be part of the solution.
The president expressed hope that Greece will fulfill its commitments to carry out the promised reforms and a final agreement will be reached within the next hours.
Plevneliev informed that he raised the topic of the accession of Bulgaria to the Schengen Area at the summit in Brussels.
In his words, Bulgaria was fully prepared for accession and the country did not expect further postponement.
He reminded that there were several European Parliament declarations in support of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen Area as well as several concrete decisions of the European Commission on the same matter.
Plevneliev announced that he will be leaving on a visit to Berlin on Friday and Schengen will be the main topic in his meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and representatives of the parliament.
Due to the same reason, the Bulgarian Head of State had also met with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
