Bulgaria and Serbia need to launch new infrastructure projects and finalise existing ones, Serbia’s Mining and Energy Minister Aleksandar Antic said on Monday.

In addition to major joint infrastructure projects in energy and transport, the two neighbouring countries could benefit from boosting bilateral trade turnover and developing joint initiatives in the area of tourism, Antic said at the opening of the second session of the joint inter-governmental economic cooperation committee.

The two-day meeting in Belgrade has brought together Antic and Bulgaria’s Economy Minister Bozhidar Lukarski, the two co-chairmen of the commitee.

Bulgaria will aim to draw investment in priority sectors such as electronics, information technology, outsourcing, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, mechanical engineering, transport and logistics, food, agriculture and healthcare, Lukarski said at the opening session, according to a statement of the Economy Ministry.

The priorities of the Economy Ministry are aimed at creating conditions for accelerating economic growth, Lukarski said, and expressing confidence that their implementation will facilitate active and successful partnership between Bulgaria and Serbia.

Serbia ranked 16th in terms of Bulgaria’s exports last year and was 19th in terms of imports, according to official Bulgarian data. Bilateral trade turnover increased by 4.4% in 2014.
