Bulgaria: Bulgaria C-Bank Warns of Fake BGN 2 Notes

A new type of counterfeit banknotes of BGN 2 (EUR 1) issue 2005 has been spotted, Bulgaria’s central bank warned on Friday.

The holographic band, which is the basic security feature of a banknote most often checked in circulation, is fake with its optical effects resembling those of genuine banknotes to a great extent.

When touched with fingertips, the fake notes’ paper feels thinner than the original paper. In addition, the counterfeit banknote lacks relief in the printed images on the obverse.

When looking at the banknote against a light source, an unclear residual image watermark - a lion – can be seen, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) said in a statement.

The BNB announced in November 2014 it had approved the design of a BGN 2 coin that will replace the notes of the same face value in 2015.
