Zoran Zaev, leader of Macedonia’s opposition Social Democrats, expects the political crisis in the country to be resolved by the end of June.

Speaking to reporters in the tent city set up by the opposition in front of the government headquarters in Skopje to press their demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Zaev said that the European Council of Ministers has decided that the crisis needs to be resolved by the end of June.

Asked whether any progress has been achieved in EU-mediated talks between the government and the opposition held in Skopje and Strasbourg, Zaev said the leaders of the main political parties still haven’t started negotiating in earnest, according to MIA news agency.

The EU’s Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn and MEPs  Richard Howitt, Ivo Vajgl and Eduard Kukan will arrive in Skopje on Monday to mediate the negotiations between the leaders of the four biggest political parties – Zaev’s SDSM, Gruevski’s VMRO-DPMNE, DUI led by Ali Ahmeti and DPA of Menduh Thaci.

The four party leaders have agreed to hold another round of talks early next week after their negotiations ended inconclusively on Tuesday.
