Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Croatia’s First Deputy Prime Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusic have agreed that poor transport and energy connections in Southeastern Europe are impeding the economic development of the region.

Plevneliev and Pusic discussed Monday in Sofia opportunities for deepening cooperation in a number of spheres of mutual interest in bilateral terms and in an EU context, according to a media statement of the President’s Office.

Plevneliev and Pusic were unanimous that energy cooperation aimed at improving regional energy security was a challenge for the two countries.

The Bulgarian President noted that the connection of the energy and gas transmission grids of the SEE countries and the establishment of a regional energy exchange were preconditions for the creation of a regional energy market that would provide access to energy resources at competitive prices.

Plevneliev declared that Bulgaria gave priority treatment to the construction of gas grid interconnectors with neighboring countries.

Bulgaria’s head of state and Croatia’s First Deputy Prime Minister underscored the need for a firm and noticeable commitment on the part of the EU to guaranteeing the preservation of the territorial integrity of Macedonia and the civil and ethnic peace.

Plevneliev expressed his appreciation for the constructive talks and the friendly atmosphere during his visit to Croatia earlier in 2015.
