British Prime Minister David Camerion has unveiled new measures aimed at cutting immigration to the UK.

The measures announced on Thursday included making working illegally a criminal offence and giving authorities the power to seize illegal earnings. The new criminal offence will apply to migrants who have entered the UK illegally and also those who came to the country legally but are in breach of their conditions or have overstayed, the BBC noted in its coverage of the news.

The British premier also wants to force EU migrants to wait for four years before they are granted access to social welfare benefits and to win the power to deport out-of-work EU jobseekers after six months.

Cameron also said he would ask the government’s immigration advisers to find ways of cutting economic migration. Professions that had become over-reliant on hiring immigrants would be asked to train British workers instead.

The prime minister spoke at the Home Office just hours after the Office for National Statistics announced net annual migration had jumped by 52% to a near record high of 318,000 in 2014, despite his pledges to cut it to less than 100,000.

The number of Romanian and Bulgarians moving to the UK doubled to 46,000 in 2014. The two countries joined the EU in 2004.

Net migration is the difference between the numbers of people moving to the UK for a year or more and those leaving the country for the same time period.

Employment of non-British EU nationals in the UK in January to March 2015 was 283,000 higher than in the equivalent period of 2014.
