The population of Bulgaria's capital Sofia and of the other largest cities in the country increased in 2014, an inquiry has suggested.

In Sofia, the number of residents grew by 6990 people, against the backdrop of nationwide trends of depopulation and migration from villages and towns to bigger cities. Statistics from last year included, Sofia's total population now amounts to 1 228 282 (while Bulgaria's overall is around 7.2 million).

Out of 257 Bulgarian towns and cities, only 30 saw their population increase between December 31, 2013 and December 31, 2014. These include the second-largest city Plovdiv (+526) and Varna (+130), according to the inquiry carried out by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) by using demographic statistics.

There are several towns that "lost" more than a 1000 people in 2014, with the negative trend mostly observed in the poorer northern and north-western regions, but elsewhere as well.

In Vratsa, a municipal center located in Northwestern Bulgaria, the EU's poorest region, the population dwindled by 1254 people, and so it did in the northern town of Pleven, by 1144.

In the south, Pernik (-1135) and Haskovo (-1007) come next.
