European Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva announced that the EU funds under the new programme period foresaw the allocation of BGN 680 M to the Sofia underground railway.

Georgieva said this on Friday, when she attended the opening of the underground extension to Business Park Sofia.

The EU Commissioner stated that Bulgaria could expect BGN 32 B from EU funds in the new programme period, Focus news agency reports.

According to her, BGN 10 B were already available and out of them BGN 680 M were allocated to the underground in Sofia.

The Vice-President noted that the EU solidarity and the funds allocated to Bulgaria were successfully transformed to the benefit of the citizens.

Georgieva added that Bulgaria has managed to absorb 75 % of the funds under the previous programme period and although the country lagged behind, it managed to catch up.

She commended the efforts of the director of the Sofia underground Stoyan Bratoev and the construction workers, wishing them to become involved in EU-funded projects in other countries.

Georgieva was particularly impressed by the playground and gardens, which had been built in the vicinity of the underground stations.
