"I cannot interfere in synodal affairs, but I have to remind that at a referendum on the issue of "Republic or Monarchy", held 70 years ago, 90% of the Bulgarian people called for a republic. Almost at the same time a vote on a Great National Assembly is held where the opposition gains 1.2 million votes. I don't recommend to anyone to review this vote now."

Bulgaria's President (2002-2012) Georgi Parvanov commenting on a decision by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to mention Bulgaria's last monarch and former PM Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha as "King of the Bulgarians" during prayers.

The move, adopted last week, is in line with Orthodox traditions.

As for the 1946 referendum, it was conducted before the Communist regime was officially consolidated tightening its grip on Bulgaria with the establishment of a one-party system. However, the 1944-1949 period and its democratic record is still subject to much discussion among historians.
