The Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton, who was admitted to hospital in the early stages of labour on Saturday, gave birth to a daughter.

Kensington Palace informed that the birth went well and both the duchess and the baby were doing well, the BBC reports.

The Duke of Cambridge Prince William was present for the birth and members of both families were informed of the delivery.

The newborn weighs 8lbs 3oz and is fourth in the order of succession to the British throne after her grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and brother Prince George.

Earlier on Saturday, the duchess was admitted to the Lindo Wing of the St Mary's Hospital in west London, where she gave birth to Prince George in July 2013.
